Experience Points are the rewards player characters get for accomplishing things in the game. As they gain experience, they become more hardy and they improve their skills. Players spend XP to upgrade stats and skills, buy new tricks, etc.

Giving Out XP

It is up to the Gamemaster to determine how much XP to award players based on their actions. The game doesn't specify "hard-coded" numbers simply because it would be impossible to guess all the different possibilities a party might encounter. Also, each party is different. So the challenge for the GM is to figure out a good pace that enables the players to upgrade that's right for their campaign. Giving out too much XP too fast might cause players to become too powerful too soon, which might make certain things too easy for them to overcome. Alternatively, giving out too little XP might leave players feeling cheated.

One way to figure out how much XP to give out is to consider how fast you want players to improve. Figure out when you want them to be able to increase their capabilities and plan accordingly from there. For example, if you want them to have enough XP to upgrade a stat every other session, you'll want to divy out XP at a rate of about 1200 per session.

For combat, one possibility is to give out double XP for the amount of health an enemy had. This means that for an easy foe of 25 health, the XP earned is 50. Then the XP per foe is always proportionate to its difficulty.
