The Federation of New American States is perhaps the best attempt at forming a legitimate government to replace the United States in the Aftermath. It was "rushed into production" within a few months following the decline of civilization by the surviving members of the former US Senate and House. The Federation consists currently of 11 new states, made up of the former Continental US, minus Texas, which declared itself independent. Hawaii also declared its independence, and Alaska was annexed by Canada. There are also parts of previous Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada made up of the Kingdom of Jero, which is at war with the New Federation.

History

The former United States government attempted to maintain control throughout the chaos that ensued from the incidents that brought about the destruction of civilization, but the country erupted into a state of unrest. Even with the institution of martial law, people were dying too quickly from the spread of the Vanthavirus. Once the dust began to settle, the surviving members of the former government convened in Philadelphia (because Washington, DC had been destroyed) to attempt a plan to reinstate the government as soon as possible. Their priority was to establish a new Constitution and rally any remaining forces from the military to prevent any attempts at invasion on homeland soil. Senator Rodney Sterling was nominated to serve as interim president until official voting could be done. Once the borders and seas were considered somewhat secure, the new government established 11 states and prioritized establishing a military presence in each state to establish safe zones and reinstate basic services. They currently have limited internet, radio communication, air transportation, some electricity, and fuel refineries. They also began production of a new currency in the form of coins, which are unofficially called quibs.

Flag

The flag of the New Federation features a dark red border surrounding a field of blue with 11 stars in a circle to represent each of the 11 states.

New States

The eleven new states are Arland, California, Cascadia, Cumberland, Dakota, Franklin, Lincoln, New England, New Virginia, Sterling, and West Lincoln.

Currency

New Federation quib

The new government has begun issuing coin currency called quibs. They are made of bronze, and feature the bust of the new president, along with the new motto, From Chaos, Order. It has 6 stars on the face, and 5 stars on the back.

Controversy and Conflict

Because many survivors are vying for power and control, many factions don't recognize the legitimacy of the Federation. Some others don't understand how new governments are formed, and so they are skeptical. Despite the fast-growing efforts by the Federation to restore civilization and to provide restoration of many services, including protection by its military branch, the New American States Army Corps, many citizens are simply biding their time and waiting to see what happens.

The new federation is also at war with the Kingdom of Jero, which is an enclave nation made up of parts of the former states of Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. The State of California is the site of most of the fighting, where the borders clash constantly with one another. Cascadia and Dakota also see some action, but they do not have the same number of dedicated forces. The Republic of Texas has not declared war, and has an established embassy in Philadelphia to work on building trade agreements with the Federation. Jero currently does not have an ambassador.
