Kingdom of Jero
The Kingdom of Jero is an enclave nation state made up of parts of former Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. It is surrounded by the states of California, Cascadia, and Dakota. The kingdom actually predates the Federation of New American States by several months, which is why the New Federation was never able to claim its territory. The kingdom is a monarchy, with its head of state being King Matthias Jerome. Unliked the Republic of Texas, it does not have an embassy in Philadelphia.
History
The Citizen Freedom Brigade, an anti-establishment militia based out of Idaho, formed their own territory in Idaho shortly after the fall of civilization. This group was heavily armed and full of preppers, so many managed to survive in the Aftermath. They began working soon after the collapse to establish their own libertarian style society under the direction of original CFB leader, David Cosgrove, but there was a mutiny when he started to show signs up corruption and trying to exert too much control, which went against many of the group's established principles. Matthias Jerome, with the help of his inner circle, managed to gain a huge following and push for the removal of Cosgrove. Jerome mounted a massive word-of-mouth campaign, promising to act solely in line with the militia's principles. His inner circle assassinated Cosgrove and installed Jerome as head of state, but Jerome managed to convince everyone that a benevolent dictatorship would be preferable, as they could accomplish more in a shorter amount of time than under a bureaucracy. This angered some idealistic citizens, but Jerome's charisma and actual acts of benevolent leadership assuaged their fears; he also leveraged his cultlike appeal among his more dedicated followers. As an act of good faith, he signed an executive order limiting his rule to a period of three years, after which citizens would be allowed to vote on whether or not to keep the system in place or implement a new one, which allowed him to solidify his position and establish the monarchy he had been hoping for.
Flag
The original flag of the Kingdom of Jero, which was designed by Jerome himself, featured a similar Union Jack style design to the United Kingdom in the colors of the Gadsden Flag. This design in particular proved to be suboptimal for members of the King's Army when wearing subdued flag patches in uniform, as it was indistinguishable from the UK flag. A redesign was ordered, which was done by an actual artist, and this new flag featured the same coloration, but with four stripes, a stallion on a shield, a crown, and a laurel wreath.
Controversy and Conflict
The Kingdom is currently at war with the New Federation, which viewed the Kingdom as a threat to national security shortly after its formation. King Matthias initially had no quarrel with the Federation, but he formally declared war when the Federation attempted a hostile invasion of his territory. The State of California is the site of most of the fighting, where the borders clash constantly with one another. Cascadia and Dakota also see some action, but they do not have the same number of dedicated forces.
